Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (Fee Paid)

NIJAC is inviting applications for Legal Chairman (3 positions) for the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal.

The Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal (SENDT) considers parents’ appeals against the decisions of the Education Authority about children’s special educational needs. It also deals with claims of disability discrimination in relation to children at school.

It is intended to make 3 appointments and to maintain a reserve list for 12 months from the anticipated date of first appointment 5 August 2024.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for appointment applicants need, by 5 August 2024, to have at least seven years’ standing as either a Barrister called to the Bar of Northern Ireland, or Solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland. 

Salary/Fee: The fee paid is £542.38 per day, £271.19 per half day and £542.38 per day for training.

NIJAC Staff Vacancies

NIJAC is inviting applications for the following positions:

Director of Appointments and Engagement

Salary Range £52,578 - £56,237 (Under review) 

The Director will lead in the development and delivery of an efficient and professional recruitment and selection service for the judiciary and will provide expert guidance to the CEO and Commissioners. He/she will also lead on engagement with a broad range of stakeholders as part of NIJAC’s diversity and outreach activities. This post is a key member of the Senior leadership Team, and will make a vital contribution to strategy, policy, and governance across the organisation. 

Applicants must have: 

  • Chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development; AND
  • At least 5 years’ experience across both recruitment and diversity functions, including team leadership. AND 
  • Experience of drafting and presenting papers to Senior Management Team and Board.

Recruitment Manager

Salary range: £32,880 – £34,011 (Under review) 

The Recruitment Manager will work closely with colleagues and Commissioners as part of a busy team to ensure an effective and coordinated approach to the appointment of judicial offices. Applicants must have: 

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience gained in an HR role; AND 
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a managerial role including the management of people; AND 
  • Demonstrable IT systems experience (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, or other similar systems); AND 4. Associate level CIPD membership

Corporate Services Manager  

Salary range: £32,880 – £34,011 (Under review) 

The Corporate Services Manager post sits within the Finance and Corporate Services Directorate and is the key corporate support person for Board/Committees, Corporate Governance, business planning, and Facilities/IT management etc. across NIJAC. 

Applicants must have: 

  • Suitable relevant experience to include at least two of the following areas: 

    a) Support to Board/Committee meetings; 

    b) Corporate Governance e.g. policy reviews, corporate risk management, follow-up of audit recommendations, policy adherence monitoring etc.; 

    c) Business Planning and Performance; 

    d) Facilities/IT Management and Support; 

    e) Information Assurance/ Data Protection. 

    AND 

  •  At least 2 GCE ‘A’ levels. AND 3. Experience in use of Microsoft Excel.

Judicial Opportunities for Registered Medical Practitioners

NIJAC is seeking to appoint various doctors to include Consultant/Specialist Associates, GPs and other eligible medical practitioners to sit as fee paid members of the Appeal Tribunals.

Generalists 

NIJAC are seeking to recruit Medical Generalist Members for appeals against decisions made by the Department for Communities on entitlement to Personal Independence Payments and ESA. No medical examination of appellants is required.

To be eligible for appointment as a Medical Generalist Member is to, by date of application:

  • Be a registered medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC). A Registered medical practitioner means a fully registered person within the meaning of the Medical Act 1983 whether or not they hold a licence to practise under the Act.

Specialists

NIJAC is seeking to recruit Consultant/Special Associates as Medical Specialist Members. The main function of the fee paid specialist medical member is to hear and determine appeals from those claiming Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. They may also be required to examine appellants for the purposes of deciding if they have suffered an industrial accident or if they suffer from an industrial disease, and to decide on the level of disablement.

To be eligible for appointment as a Medical Specialist (Consultant/Special Associate/) Member is to, by date of application:

  • Be a registered specialist medical practitioner with the General Medical Council (GMC). A registered medical practitioner means a fully registered person within the meaning of the Medical Act 1983 whether or not they hold a licence to practise under the Act.
