Final Week to Apply for the Lay Magistrates Recruitment Scheme

There is now just one week left to apply for the Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission's (NIJAC) Lay Magistrates Recruitment Scheme.

It is intended to make a minimum of 119 appointments across three Administrative Court Divisions in Northern Ireland and to maintain a reserve list for 12 months from the anticipated date of the first appointment (1 April 2027).

Lay Magistrates make an important contribution to the administration of justice in Northern Ireland. By bringing life experience, community insight and sound judgement to the courts, they help ensure that the justice system reflects and serves the society in which we live.

NIJAC is seeking applications from people from all walks of life and is committed to attracting applicants who reflect the diversity of communities across Northern Ireland. No legal or formal qualifications are required.

Whether you have experience through your profession, voluntary work, community involvement or personal life, you may have the skills and qualities needed to become a Lay Magistrate.

Serving as a Lay Magistrate is a unique opportunity to contribute to the judiciary, develop new skills and help keep community at the heart of justice.

Applications close at 12noon on Tuesday 7 July 2026.
